A Sad Birthday for Family of Surrey Crash Victim
November 29, 2010

On Sunday (Nov. 28), Sanjeeve Eric Kesho Sharma of Surrey would have turned 17. Sharma was 15 when he accepted a ride from a 16-year-old driver who clipped another car before slamming into a power pole.

The June 29, 2009 crash claimed the life of the athletic 6'1" Sharma. Father Sanjay Sharma posted a message on his son's memorial website (www.sanjeevesharma.com) on Sunday.

"Today would have marked Sanjeeve's 17th birthday, not meant to be because of the careless act of another person," he said. "...today and every day we celebrate Sanjeeve's legacy.

In the new year, family and friends will begin soliciting donations for the Sanjeeve Sharma Memorial Scholarship Fund which will be presented to a student at Princess Margaret Secondary on June, 2011, the year Sanjeeve would have graduated from the school.

He was riding in a Chevrolet Malibu that slammed into a BMW SUV in a Newton business district. A 16-year-old boy from Surrey was at the wheel of the Malibu with two passengers – Sanjeeve and an 18-year-old who was also from Surrey. The driver of the Malibu was reportedly driving erratically before he hit the BMW, then slammed into a light standard. The 16-year-old driver and 18-year-old passenger in the Malibu escaped with what are described as minor injuries. So did the three occupants of the SUV.

So far no criminal charges have been laid, but father Sanjay Sharma is suing the driver of the Malibu and his family.

The court action also names the driver of the BMW SUV and accuses them both of driving contrary to the restrictions on their licences.

The Sharma family has also launched a public campaign to call for better enforcement of the rules that require new drivers to have an adult supervisor sitting beside them who is at least 25 years old and has a valid driver’s licence.

Those regulations would have applied to the 16-year-old who was driving the Malibu Sanjeeve was riding in.
