THE BENCH to honour Sanjeeve Sharma is located outside the Excellent Ice Arena in Surrey where the avid hockey player was to begin training for his rep division tryout in July of 2009.

But a few days before he could start, the athletic 6’1” 15-year-old was killed in a car crash.

The concrete bench bears a plaque with an image of the young player and his jersey number of one. Another plaque tells visitors that he now plays in heaven.

It was officially unveiled on Saturday, Feb. 6. Parents Sara and Sanjay and brother Sanjesh attended the event.

It is the second memorial to commemorate Sanjeeve’s six years playing in the Surrey Minor Hockey Association.

The first, at the North Surrey Recreation Centre, displays the jersey with his last name and number in the centre of a display case surrounded by some of the awards and trophies Sanjeeve Sharma won during his playing career.

He was riding in a white 1999 Chevrolet Malibu that slammed into a BMW SUV in a Newton business district on June 29.

A 16-year-old boy from Surrey was at the wheel of the Malibu with two passengers – Sanjeeve and an 18-yearold who was also from Surrey.

The teenage driver of the Malibu was reportedly driving erratically before he hit the BMW, then slammed into a light standard.

The other occupants of the Malibu escaped with what are described as minor injuries.

The case is still under investigation and the family has been told by police that criminal charges are likely.
