Memorial Scholarship for Fallen Student
December 29, 2009

Sanjeeve Sharma won’t be there when his classmates graduate from Princess Margaret Secondary School in June of 2011, but his name will still be called out. It will happen when one of the grads comes to the front of the assembly hall to accept a scholarship in the name of the 15-year-old who died in a car crash on June 29, 2009.

The Sanjeeve Sharma Memorial Scholarship will provide financial assistance for college or university to a Princess Margaret grad with an outstanding academic and athletic record.

Fundraising is underway with the sale of T-shirts at $20 apiece. Each has images of Sharma at different ages and a message on the front that says “Sanjeeve Sharma 1993-2009” and one on the back that says “Glory is forever.” All net proceeds from the shirts will go to the scholarship fund. Donations by cash and cheque are also being accepted. They can be given to teacher Chris Wilke at the school or mailed to 8097 134 St. Surrey, B.C. V3W 4T7. Cheques should be payable to “Princess Margaret Secondary School” and the memo should read “Sharma memorial scholarship.”

It’s been six months since the 15-year-old Sharma died in a car crash. He was riding in a Chevrolet Malibu that slammed into a BMW SUV in a Newton business district. A 16-year-old boy from Surrey was at the wheel of the Malibu. The driver of the Malibu was reportedly driving erratically before he hit the BMW, then slammed into a light standard.

The 16-year-old driver and an 18-year-old passenger in the Malibu escaped with what were described as minor injuries. So did the three occupants of the SUV. So far, no charges have been laid.
